Arshdeep puts Punjab in command against Gujarat

A fine performance by left-arm pacer Arshdeep Singh (8/73) and Ramandeep Singh (138 off 138 balls) put Punjab in a commanding position against hosts Gujarat, on the second day of ongoing Col CK Nayudu Trophy, at Sardar Patel Stadium, on Sunday.
Gujarat skipper Rahul Shah won the toss and elected to bat. However, the decision backfired as Arshdeep came up with a fine bowling performance to pack the hosts on 165 runs. In reply Punjab amassed 447 runs, with the help of Ramandeep’s innings. Gujarat boys closed the second day on 37/3, to trail by 245 runs.Earlier, Arshdeep claimed first four wickets —Kathan Patel (8), Darshil (9), Shah (0) and Het (15)—to reduce the hosts to 39/4 in 10 overs. Thereafter, M Hingrajia and K Panchal took the responsibility but managed to add only 18 runs to the total. Ikjot Singh Thind accounted for Hingrajia (16) to pack half the side on 57 runs.
Thereafter, Panchal and Y Gardharia played sensibly. The duo raised a 69-run partnership for the sixth wicket. Akul Pandove claimed claimed Gardharia (34) to broke the partnership on 126. Panchal was then joined by Tejas Patel and the duo raised a 23-run partnership to take the total to 149. Harpreet Brar claimed Tejas (4) to halt the Gujarat innings from moving further. Panchal was the next to go after falling to Arshdeep. He scored 54 off 130 balls, studded with nine boundaries.Arshdeep then took his sixth victim —Jayveer Sinh(6)— and also initiated a run out of SA Desai (0) to pack the hosts on 165.
Thind, Pandove and Brar claimed a wicket each. In reply, Punjab also lost Sanvir Singh (0) on two runs.
However, Mansab Gill and Abhishek Sharma raised a 52-run partnership for the second wicket to put things back on track before Panchal claimed the latter on 26 off 32 balls. Thereafter, Gill and Himashu Sharma hold the fort to raise a 108-run partnership. Gill was only three-run short of scoring a century, however Jayveer claimed him. Gill left the crease on 97 off 153 balls, with 14 boundaries and two sixes, on the team’s total of 162.
Meanwhile, KR Patel turned out to be a threat for Punjab as he claimed Pandove (7), Himanshu (41 off 110 balls) and Thind (3) to reduce the side to 222/6, however from this moment onwards, Ramandeep took the charge.
He along with Anmol Malhotra raised a 154-run stand for the seventh wicket to make things easy for Punjab. At 376 runs, Ramandeep played a bad short to lose his wicket to SA Desai after completing 138 off 138 balls, with 13 boundaries and eight sixes. Malhotra was the next to go after posting 57 off 100 balls, with seven boundaries and a six, on the team’s reading of 388. Though, Brar (0) failed to change the total, Anmol Malhotra (33 off 43 balls) and Arshdeep Singh (30 off 9 balls, with five sixes) played well to achieve 447.
Arshdeep was the last man out for Punjab. KR Patel (3/104) was the pick of the bowlers, while Panchal (2/31), SA Desai (2/91), Tejas (1/69) and Jayveer (1/90) were the other main wicket takers.
Gujarat boys again had a disastrous start in the second innings as they lost their three wickets on a low total of 16. Hingrajia (14) and Rahul (7) remained unbeaten to close the day on 37/3. Arshdeep claimed 2/21, while Thind claimed 1/13 to trouble the hosts.
Shlok scores unbeaten 39 in Vivek’s victory
Shlok Raina’s uneaten 39-run contribution helped Vivek High School, Mohali, beat ANM Warriors XI, Mohali, by 38 runs in the Sub-Junior Challenger Trophy, at St Joseph's Senior Secondary School, Sector 44, on Sunday. Batting first, Vivek High boys posted 148/8 in allotted 20 overs. Raina's innings was well supported by Gartaj Singh (16) and Yuv Raj Singh (11).Aryan (2/22) and Agam (2/16) were the two main wicket takers for the bowling side. In reply, ANM Warriors could manage to score only 110/7 in 20 overs. Harnoor (37) and Aryan (31) were the main contributors in the chase.
