India To Start ICC T20 World Cup Campaign Against South Africa
The ICC, on Tuesday, announced the schedule for both the men and women’s schedule for the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup, scheduled to be held in Australia in 2020. The following year will see the women’s and men’s tournaments being held as standalone events in the same year and in the same country. The ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2020 will take place from February 21 to March 8 followed by the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2020 from October 18 to November 15.
Both tournaments will be held right across Australia in eight Host Cities and 13 venues.
The men’s event will see 12 teams fighting it out for the top-prize. Eight of those 12 teams have already qualified for the competition due to their rankings as of 31 December 2018. The remaining four teams will be determined through the first qualifying round played in Geelong and Hobart leading up to the Super 12 stage. The qualifier will see eight teams fighting against each other for the remaining four slots. Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, having finished ninth and tenth respectively in the rankings, are the two known teams in the first qualifying round. The remaining six teams will be picked through another qualifying tournament that will be held later in 2019.
Hosts Australia will take on Pakistan in the first game of the Super 12 stage of the competition on October 24 while India will play against South Africa in Perth on the same day. Defending champions, the Windies, will start their title defence when they clash with New Zealand on Sunday 25 November at the MCG.
The first semi-final will take place at the SCG on Wednesday 11 November while Adelaide Oval will host the second semi-final the following night. The final will be held at the iconic MCG on November 15.
In women’s competition, defending champions Australia will start their campaign against India on February 21. Australia and India have been pitted against Sri Lanka, a qualifier and New Zealand in Group A. Group B features England, South Africa, West Indies, Pakistan and the other yet to be confirmed qualifying team.
The women’s tournament will be played in Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Perth with the SCG hosting both semi-finals on March 5.
